Love in Action

What is Love ?

Love is a verb. It must be shown through an action that favours the individual receiving it. Love is a selfless act, a sacrifice that requires YOU (the giver of love) to put your needs aside and put the needs of the receiver of your love FIRST.

We can be certain of this because our first and greatest example of true love was exemplified by our Heavenly Father. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3 vs 16, Amen. Jesus Christ literally came in the flesh, gave up His life and died (this is the sacrifice) just so that we could be freed from the captivity of the enemy and have a chance for eternal life (the favoured results of God’s love)

What I find most beautiful about this demonstration of love is that it was a choice. Mankind deservingly had an appointment to face eternal death as a result of committing sin – Romans 6 vs 23. But God, out of His own free will, chose not this pathway for us. Instead, He voluntarily provided a way through Jesus Christ JUST so that we could have life with Him.

Now that we have been shown what actual love is; we, as the living creation of God, being made in His very likeness and image are now expected to accept this love and then proceed to expand on it with our brethren.

How? Do we all have to die and be crucified too for the ones we say we love?

No. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ served a significant purpose and could only be completed by one of a divine nature.  However, in accepting Gods love, we are called to be spiritually crucified which involves denying ourselves, putting to death our carnal desires and removing it from the equation in order to love God and others genuinely.

God’s being so good has already shown us examples of how we His children can demonstrate this:

Love is patient

Love is kind

Love does not envy

Love does not boast

Love is not proud

Love does not dishonour others

Love is not self-seeking

Love is not easily angered

Love keeps no record of wrong

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in truth

Love protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres

Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13 vs 4-7.

I want you to have a think about some of the actions of love highlighted above the next time you are in the same room as your loved one. Be intentional and think to yourself, what can I do today to show patience, kindness, protection, hope etc to a loved one? Or, what can I do to avoid becoming easily angered, dishonouring, self-seeking or proud? It might be offering to do the grocery shopping or choosing to keep calm, quiet and listen during a disagreement.

Whatever you decide on, pause and pray, in your heart on your knees. Wherever you can. Ask God for the Holy Spirit to help you  put the love of Jesus Christ into action. In doing so, remember “I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4 vs 13, Amen.

A song entitled “Love” by Kirk Franklin follows.

Be blessed.
